AVG or Norton? are there better ones, more affordable? should I purchase an upgrade from my currect free avg? I have a norton icon on my desktop should I buy that instead? I want simple easy effective and affordable if not free.

Use Norton. Norton works for you even when you're not on your computer. I have it now and I don't have to worry. TRUST ME!

Norton NO!! you must be mad it will slow down your computer i hate Norton.
btw Avast is free and quite good

Norton 360 is sometimes slow.
Avg takes forever to load on startup plus annoying updates.
i recommend bitdefender.

freeware virus guards are pretty good for basic protection. but if you want comprehensive protection, get kaspersky. it's worth every penny. norton is a bit on the fence…older versions hog system resources. the new 2009 edition has a smaller memory foot print.

I used to use AVG, but they upgraded to AVG 8, which included anti spyware with the anti-virus & the combo tied up the computer. Norton really takes over control. I use Avira Free Edition Anti Virus ( love it); Spybot Search & destroy anti spyware(love it). these are both completely free & keep my PC clean. I use the free Windows Defender, because Avira free anti virus does not have a fire wall. these 3 programs, all free, keep me really safe. Hope that helps.

Norton has outgrown its usefulness. It has become a serious resource hog, and no one should bother with it any more. there is no AV that is 'THE BEST' they all have their own shortcomings. I run AVG on two of my pc's and Avast on a third, have had no problems with either of them. the key for any AV is to keep it up-to-date!

I've tried to stay away for Norton ( they may have improved their software).

A good backup routine is the ONLY way to defend against unwanted junk and crashes.
Your ISP may offer a firewall and AV, free.
If not, get into a backup routine, then use a solid GPL/GNU project.
Clamwin is a good cross platform AV.
IPtables are the best Firewall, takes a geek to configure.
Zonelabs is still free and very decent.
Trick is , and is not a trick so much as common sense, the less bloated or code heavy a gram is the slower it performs.

Antivirus software has become a necessity for windows based operating system users. due to the way windows is built and how it works makes it easy to write malicious software which gets into your personal computer without you knowing about it.

There are quite a few varieties of viruses, some make a backdoor channel into your computer and use its resources (Trojans), some only collect information about you (spyware), and some make certain advertisements popup onto your screen now and then (adware).

In order to keep your private information safe, you need a reliable, proven and effective antivirus program. Antivirus and firewall are a bit similar in purpose. A firewall is a specific program which only monitors the incoming traffic onto your computer and filters malicious data which could potentially harm your computer and yourself.

Most of the antivirus software available in the market today comes with a firewall of its own. It is automatically installed on your computer when you install the antivirus itself. Get the following, all are free for a safe surfing experience, with proven track records and do not take upsystem resources like Norton or McAffee.install in SAFE mode with networking ( hit F-8 at boot time ), run them all in SAFE modewith networking as you’ll need it for the updates all the programs below will need.Turn off RESTORE and the RECYLE BIN temporarily as virii can regenerate / reinfect even if you deletethem with both services on. after all the scanning and cleaning after a 2nd reboot and one lastscan do you turn both of them back on.

Once you set it all up create 3 email accounts..

a hotmail or yahoo account for web “verification”, this account you will not care if it get spammed

a sub account ( from the master account )to your ISP that you use for logons, this is the one you use for personalemails only to trusted people and banking, ebay and paypal. never use the account for anything else than that,you find spam is low to non existant if you follow this rule, and even if it does become spam laden, then youcan delete the account and create a new sub account and do all the email updates to ebay, paypal, banks and yourfreinds.

finally your master account from your ISP, this one you NEVER use, it’s only kept for creating sub accounts sincechanging the master account is a real pain.

and if you have a wireless router follow these tips,

1. Use WPA encryption (WPA-PSK) it’s less crackable then WEP.

2. make a passphrase that is upper & lower case and has some numbers thrown in there as well, again harder to crack.some like mAkE1t5eCurE0rel53 and as long as possible.

3. Use MAC access control so only you or authorized PC’s can connect (even if you do have encryption turned on)

4. Turn off DHCP use static addresses.

5. Turn off SSID (and change it) unless your card really needs it (some do)

6. Change username/password of access unit front end

7. Ensure you have the usual firewall enabled on your PC.

8. Paranoia rules, turn WLAN off if your not using it

New beta of Microsoft Security Essentials released with network protection

Microsoft has today both announced and released a beta version of its free Security Essentials anti-malware software. The new version of the lightweight anti-virus, anti-spyware software includes more protection against network-based attacks.

The network protection has two parts. Microsft Security Essentials now integrates with Internet Explorer to better protect against Web-based threats. This allows the program to prevent malicious scripts from running. The current version can detect such scripts when they get written to Internet Explorer’s cache, but that may be too late to protect the user.

For users of Windows Vista and Windows 7, the new Security Essentials provides protection against network exploits, by inspecting network traffic and blocking any suspicious connectivity. This feature isn’t available for Windows XP, as it depends on the Windows Filtering Platform facility that was introduced with Windows Vista. Windows Filtering Platform allows programs to plug themselves into the networking subsystem and monitor any network traffic in a robust, high performance way. This provides protection above and beyond that offered by the Windows Firewall (which the new version of Security Essentials offers to enable during installation), as it can guard against attacks made on software that’s allowed through the firewall.

The beta is available on a first-come, first-served basis on Microsoft Connect; the beta program only has a limited number of places. Microsoft claims that the beta is only available to customers in the US, Israel, Brazil, and China; nonetheless, it successfully downloaded and installed for me (I’m based in the UK). Future updates will be delivered through Microsoft Update.

Microsoft Security Essentials has already become popular thanks to its low resource usage and discreet interface. This network-based monitoring represents a significant broadening of the Security Essentials’ scope. by guarding against network attacks in addition to malware, the program is becoming something of a must-have for Windows users.

What this infection does:

NetworkControl is a Trojan that ransoms the proper operation of your computer until you purchase one of their recommended programs. This ransomware is not an actual rogue as it does not install a fake anti-virus program on your computer. instead this Trojan pretends to be a Firewall, but in reality is just a series of nag screens that block certain computer functions. This Trojan is installed on your computer through two methods. the first method is through fake online anti-malware scanners that state that your computer is infected with a variety of infections. It will then prompt you to download and install a program to protect yourself. the reality is that these online anti-malware scanners are just an advertisement and have absolutely no way of knowing what is running on your computer. the second method is through sites that utilize exploits to automatically install NetworkControl onto your computer without your permission or knowledge.

Regardless of how NetworkControl is installed on your computer, once installed it will create the C:NetworkControl folder and stores its files there. Then it will configure NC.exe to launch automatically when Windows starts. Once this program is started you will see constant nag alerts stating that someone named Adam1 is making modifications to your computer and asking if you wish to Block or allow these modifications from hapenning.

While NetworkControl is running it will display a message and terminate programs that you attempt to run. It does this to protect itself from being removed as well as to make your computer unusable. the text of the alert you will see when a program is terminated is:

System Notification Running applications blocked by the administrator Adam1.

Network Control will also display a constant stream of nag screens that attempt to make you think that an Administrator on your computer named Adam1 is making modifications to Windows. the text of some of these alerts are:

System Restore Critical System Notification Remote administrator Adam1 has changed some system files of Windows OS. Checking will take several minutes. please do not turn off the computer – it can lead to system crash.

Remote login request Don’t allow access unless you clearly understand what you are doing. Your computer received a remote login request by user: "Adam1" from the IP <ip address>. Deny or Allow

Remote query of terminating application Don’t allow access unless you clearly understand what you are doing. Your computer has received a remote query from IP <ip address> of terminating application. Allow access or Deny Access

Remote software installation Don’t allow access unless you clearly understand what you are doing. Your computer has received a request from the IP <ip address> to install Zeus software. Block Installation or Allow installation

Unable to find installed software System was unable to find installed firewall software.

When you acknowledge these alerts it will state that there is no firewall software on your computer and then open a Solution Center where they attempt to have you purchase a program. the programs listed in this Solution Center are Advanced Net Firewall, Shield EC, Personal Network Protect, IP Blockator, and Network Defender. It is unsure if any of these programs are actually real, but it is a fact that all of the alerts are fake and should be ignored.

As you can see, NetworkControl was created solely to make your computer unusable so that you will then be scared into purchasing one of the programs it is trying to sell. you should definitely not purchase any of the programs it promotes, and if you have, you should contact your credit card company and dispute the charges stating that the program is a virus and a scam. To remove NetworkControl and any related malware, please follow the steps in the removal guide below.

Question by wondering: Free vs. paid anti-spyware/virus programs?Is the free version of spyware/virus program such as avg, avast, or avira is better than the paid versions of webroot anti-virus and spyware (winner of top ten reviews)?

Answer by Simon PJust go for free Avast or Avira they are more than good enough for an average user.

Avg doesn’t detect certain types of virus (rootkits) so i would stay away from that.

I have McAfee and I am sick and tired of it. I want to find a new Anti Virus program, but don't have a clue as to which one I should choose.
Any suggestions?

you say you are sick of it, but do you have any evidence to lead you to believe that it is not working for you?

The big three that are free are,Avast,Avira and AVG.you can read reviews and get downloads at cnet.com,top of page click downloads.on next page click windows,then next page in popular downloads you will find them.Pick only one and do an up date,and run.Also check out a firewall.Read reviews and pick one.yes you need one,when reading reviews you will know why it is good to have one.good Luck.

Go with the CLAM. it free and opensource so you can adjust to your needs.

Actually I would recommend getting antivirus and antispyware software because these days, there are just as many spyware threats out there as there are virus threats.

There is a great new tool out there by Paretologic called Anti-virus PLUS which does both – it is pretty state of the art and actually blocks spyware or virus related websites as well for an extra layer of protection.

I myself used to “hack” mobile phones to enter their FS (filesystem) to give them the latest update that makes them able to use flash menus (.SWF files as menus).This is not permitted to be done by Sony Ericssons firmware rule. But this can be overwritet by the program A2 CDA file maker.This program takes away those restrictions that Sony Ericsson made. Now you can put in the new files. To do this you need theprogram A2 uploader. IF YOUR PHONE HAVENT BEEN UNBRANDED you need to use the CDA File maker. If it already been unbranded, just add the files (.swf files).There is just a small problem now a days, a virus attack was made against “the_laser” project. Which made all of his project “a2″ unusable. Since you get a Trojan Virus that quickly spread in your system. But lets go back again til before this happened.

When you made that CDA file. Go put it in the file system. (links inside the FS in the bottom). IF this is done, go on to uploading your SWF files. Links also in bottom.

Anyone kno where to get a useable a2uploader? (cant be found right now)

The file could not be used because you may not be permitted to use it or you are not an administrator.

After that message you will get a Virus report of the file (from your Anti-virus.

We have had complaints from some customers saying that their Web Project build performance with VS is very slow and it turns out that for some of the complaints the actual issue was anti-virus programs running on their machines.

So, how do anti-virus programs affect VS build?

Please take a look at the following snippet from ScottGu’s blog to understand why!

Watch out for Virus Checkers, Spy-Bots, and Search/Indexing Tools

VS hits the file-system a lot, and obviously needs to reparse any file within a project that has changed the next time it compiles.  One issue I’ve seen reported several times are cases where virus scanners, spy-bot detecters, and/or desktop search indexing tools end up monitoring a directory containing a project a little too closely, and continually change the timestamps of these files (they don’t alter the contents of the file – but they do change a last touched timestamp that VS also uses).  This then causes a pattern of: you make a change, rebuild, and then in the background the virus/search tool goes in and re-searches/re-checks the file and marks it as altered – which then causes VS to have to re-build it again.  Check for this if you are seeing build performance issues, and consider disabling the directories you are working on from being scanned by other programs.  I’ve also seen reports of certain Spybot utilities causing extreme slowness with VS debugging – so you might want to verify that you aren’t having issues with those either.

If you are running into slowness with VS builds please try to exclude your directories from being scanned by anti-virus programs and see if it helps to improve the build performance.

I tried to follow your e-mail to download the antispyware to my computer.While the anti-virus downloaded when I clicked edit. the edit prompt did not come up on the anitspyware.What can I do now
